The cost of credit in Italy is shown as TAEG (tasso annuo effettivo globale), the local equivalent of APR. What the usury threshold is, how the CRIF credit bureau works and what rights borrowers have is explained at the end of the page.

Prestiti al consumo a breve termine in Italia
Personal loans (prestiti personali) and credit cards in Italy are offered by banks and finance companies listed in the Bank of Italy’s register. Besides the TAEG, the agreement shows the TAN — the nominal rate without fees; the gap between the two shows how much the mandatory costs add. Many Italian credit cards work on a revolving basis: the debt is repaid in fixed monthly instalments while interest is charged on the balance, so small payments can drag the debt out for a long time. Before lending, the bank checks your credit history with private credit bureaus (SIC), mainly CRIF.

This section covers larger loans, debt consolidation and brokers. Early repayment of a consumer loan costs no more than 1 % of the amount, or no more than 0.5 % if less than a year of the contract remains.

How to choose a loan in Italy
Come scegliere un prestito in Italia
In Italy every type of loan has a legal rate ceiling, and credit histories are kept by several bureaus at once. Before applying, it helps to know how the TAEG differs from the TAN, how long a late-payment entry stays on file and how to make sure a broker is operating legally.
How does the TAEG differ from the TAN?
The TAEG shows the full cost of the loan including fees, while the TAN shows only the nominal rate, so offers should be compared by TAEG. Italy has an anti-usury law (legge 108/1996): every quarter the Ministry of Economy publishes threshold rates (tasso soglia) for each type of loan, and if the contract rate is above the threshold, the loan is treated as usurious and no interest is payable on it. Compare offers by TAEG and the total amount to repay (importo totale dovuto), not by the size of the monthly payment.
How long does a late-payment entry stay on file?
After the debt is repaid, for 12 to 36 months, depending on how serious the arrears were. Credit histories in Italy are kept by private bureaus (SIC) — CRIF, Experian and CTC — while the Bank of Italy’s Central Credit Register (Centrale dei Rischi) records large debts and all serious arrears. You can request your own records free of charge, and with a late-payment entry a bank is likely to turn you down.
How can you make sure a broker is operating legally?
Check it in the OAM register: a credit intermediary (mediatore creditizio) or agent in Italy must be registered there, which you can check on the register’s website. Brokers pass your application to partner lenders and show you suitable offers. If you are asked to pay up front for finding a loan, walk away. Brokers are marked “broker” in their lender cards.
Important information
Informazioni importanti
Banks and finance companies in Italy are supervised by the Bank of Italy (Banca d’Italia), and disputes with them can be settled out of court through the Banking and Financial Ombudsman (Arbitro Bancario Finanziario) after first making a written complaint to the bank itself. You can withdraw from a consumer credit agreement within 14 days (diritto di recesso) by repaying the amount plus interest for the days you had it. This page is for reference only and is not an invitation to borrow; AllCredits is not responsible for the consequences of dealing with these companies. If you fall behind, default interest (interessi di mora) is charged, the arrears are reported to CRIF and the debt may be passed to collectors. Borrow only what you are sure you can repay.
AllCredits is an information catalogue: we do not lend money or open accounts. Most links on this page are affiliate links — if you sign up for a product after clicking, the company may pay us a commission, but this does not change your terms. The Italian section is still small, and new offers are added as new partners join. We have no rating for Italy. Changes to the list are shown in the “Latest updates” block. The details in the lender cards come from the companies’ own materials; check the current terms on their websites before signing.
